This version of "Beowulf" is compiled by Paul D. Storrie and Ron Randall. I must say I was much more impressed with this visual version of the text.
The artwork itself was very complex and life like. I had the sense that Beowulf is a big strong man who could save the world a billion times if only he found the fountain of youth. The author of this graphic novel finds the room to add in the ways we are told Beowulf is strong, giving us that reason to believe in him.
I'm not fond of the depiction of Grendel or his mommy in these visuals either. Grendel looks like a giant werewolf and his mother looks like a fuzzy animal wearing sweats. Where's the slime and grim from being a river, swamp, whatever-you-want-to-call-it monster?
When Beowulf goes to fight the dragon, the words of the text don't match the drawing. The graphic novel says Beowulf dies from a poisonous scratch from the beast, I couldn't find a depiction of Beowulf getting scratched. I feel that the fight was down played. There is a little fire and a tiny bit of a rustle between Beowulf and the dragon. Come on now, it's Beowulf's last fight, it should be more epic than this.
