This is my theory about Fifty Shades of Grey by EL James: Yes, everyone is drawn in by the eroticism but more people get invested in the love story. Most have had a relationship like Ana’s and Christian’s, no I’m not talking about the sex part. We fall in love with someone but the love isn’t enough. Some obstacle has to stand in the way. It might be something as simple as compatibility, location, different wants or desires or it can be something monumental such as “Fifty shades of fucked up.”
Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele’s relationship is a bit rocky maybe it’s appropriate that this erotic romance started off rocky for me. I wasn’t too keen on the first chapter, there was nothing I found gripping. It was corny for me. I do think the hype that the book is now receiving has much to do with the chapter’s corniness. Everyone in the world knows what “Fifty Shades” is about. When words like succumb and other submissive words are used it’s no longer a hint of what’s to come but more of a ‘duh’ I know someone’s going to succumb.
The allure of Christian Grey is still beyond me. I can’t see the reason why women are falling over his charm wanting to find a real life man like him. Yes he has money and makes all the decisions. That might be nice but when you roll your eyes at him… just look what happened to Anastasia. She’s not even supposed to look him in the eyes or call him by his first name, in the Red Room of Pain or out. Grey strips her of her ability to choose and of her free will. Ana’s innocence didn’t help in the whole matter either. I wish I could say Christian used this to his advantage, which to a point he did, but at the same time he tries being as gentle with her as possible. While Ana’s virginal innocence is spell binding to him Christian definitely scars her for life. Will a regular night with a much better grounded man leave her earning for more passion? I think probably so.
I won’t be all mad at the structure of the relationship. Yes I wish a man could whisk me away in Charlie Tango and buy me a sleek new car but I wouldn’t be able to stand him telling me what to eat or showing up unexpectedly in my home town while visiting my mother. Also, a man who knows how to control the bedroom is something I won’t complain about. With Christian’s over the top control freak I found myself often screaming at Ana to just walk away. Christian could be such an ass sometimes. She should have just got right up in his face and then walked out of the room; leaving him something to think about. At the same time I was cheering for Grey every time he made strides to change himself.
When Ana finally walks out the door I was cheering for her but my heart was breaking for Christian. For the future I want her to stay away from him but at the same time I want him to win her over. There are just so many contradictions in the way that I want this relationship to turn out. Hopefully Christian will get his act together and be willing to get rid of the punishment aspect of his pain/ pleasure lifestyle. I wish Ana to be strong and stay away from Grey and not remain under his spell. She’s too innocent for this to be the only person she sexually encounters. She needs to go out in the world to experience different sexual lifestyles in order to figure out what she wants while Christian figures out a way to openly love Anastasia.
