Somewhere in the middle of Rodrick Rules I became upset with Greg. He clearly did not learn anything from the cheese incident and still thought he was better than Rowley. I would think that he would see his friendship as a mutual bonding/giving experience yet he still thought he was the one teaching Rowley something. I guess a new school year does not mean one will learn to be a new better person.
Take the prank he played on Chirag where everyone in school acted like he was still away at another school. When Greg got in trouble for the prank he put the blame on Chirag because Chirag just had to tell his parents and also tell the principal. After going to Chirag’s house to apologize Chirag invites him in to play video games and Greg says “I guess I forgive him, too.” Maybe this was just a set back seeing as how this is the same thing he did to Rowley last year. Rowley getting kicked off the safety patrol was his fault because he let Greg borrow his rain coat. Greg shouldn’t be to disliked for this, seeing how there are many adults how still don’t take responsibility for their actions. At least in Greg’s case there is still time to learn and grow.
Greg did get Rowley and Leland a chance with the board games. He gave something he thought was below him and some what nerdy a chance. He may not have learned that much of a lesson since he only liked it because he could do what ever he wanted in the game, it was a real life fantasy land; especially since he lit Rowley’s eye brow with a torch. Than again maybe he was lying to his diary. There is a good chance he really enjoyed and had fun playing with Rowley and Leland and realized this “nerdy” person may really be a part of who he is. Greg even writes a come back in defense of Leland when Rodrick calls Leland “… the biggest nerd in [Rodrick’s] high school.”(pg. 116)
“But this is coming from a guy who spends his Saturday nights putting fake throw-up on people’s cars in the Home Depot parking lot. So I think I’ll just take Rodrick’s opinion with a grain of salt.”(pg. 117)
Greg does have another set back at the end of the diary during the talent show. When Leland wins most wholesome performance he says that maybe Leland is really a nerd. I think Greg is learning though, there is definitely room for growth here.
I did feel as though I was in a technology twilight zone during Greg’s diary entry about his history paper poem. We’ve all been there: it’s supposed to snow so we all slack off on studying or doing our home work. I use to do it all the time but I was smart enough to do it only if it was snowing and I would calculate how much snow was on the ground plus how fast the snow was coming down, and then I would slack. Greg on the other hand hears the word snow from the forecaster and just brushes his project off from video games. I suddenly felt thrusted a few decades back because Greg is freaking out because it’s too late to go to the library but doesn’t think of using the internet for a few pages. He wastes time asking his dad for help and thinks of using Rodrick’s old assignment before he even comes to thinking of the internet. This kid was so lazy I felt like he had no other options and kept thinking is this really the 90s. Then I thought maybe they don’t have a computer with internet at home but with this new technology era almost everyone has computers and the Heffley’s don’t seem like the type to not afford a computer. When he finally gets to the internet there’s a black out most likely by all the invisible snow lying around. But we have all been in those blackout/ my internet won’t work!!! situations. This should probably be a warning/ lesson for all of us out there that are procrastinators but I will tell you first hand that it never is.
I think the title of this book is some what deceiving. I fail to see how Rodrick ruled any of it. Yes he knows some of Greg’s secrets and in the end Rodrick finally spills, making Greg king-like to his peers (a lesson in how gossip and rumors get twisted) and most of the book is about Rodrick I really don’t see how he rules any of it. Or maybe in Greg’s eyes Rodrick ruled Greg’s life or some how controlled it but with some more growth Greg will hopefully see that the whole time it was Greg Rules, Greg had control of his own life he just spun it into someone else’s hands. Most of what happens is typical sibling chaos and at one point or another, if we’re so fortunate to have a sibling that will more than likely rule us for awhile just because they can.
“The truth is, Rodrick can pretty much treat me anyway he wants, because he knows there’s nothing I can do about it.” (pg. 24)
Certain things in Rodrick Rules showed up in the “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” movie. Such as the secret language Rowley and Greg tried to make up. Where Rowley also went on vacation showed up in the movie. I wonder why the film makers decided to have Rowley go on vacation to Argentina instead of where he really went during the first diary which is to Australia. I guess switching these things up didn’t add or subtract much from the film plot line.
When it comes to the movie “Rodrick Rules” there are a few diary entries that I would like to see play out. I feel as if the talent show will replace the play “The Wizard of OZ” from the first diary. Manny didn’t show up too often in this book so he is most likely going to make as many appearances in this film as he did in the last. If I was charge of the film I would have the first thing audiences see be Greg sitting on a toilet wrapped like a mummy in toilet paper and than have him explain the swimming and his summer. Marmadu and the French pen pal diary entries won’t make its way into the movie or at least for not that long. I definitely want to see the prank on Chirag and the Mom Bucks to make its way as a plot. I wonder how much Rowley will be in this movie since he doesn’t have a huge plot line, except the fact that he broke his toe because of Greg.
